Hayes, social activist Memorial services for the Rev. William A. Hayes, a former Buffalo pastor known for his social activism and efforts to form ties among Christian denominations, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday in Heritage United Church of Christ, Baltimore. He died Saturday (Aug.

21, 1993) in his Columbia home. Mr. Hayes, the 65-year-old retired pastor of First Church of the Brethren in Baltimore, had served for 12 years as pastor of what is now New Covenant United Church of Christ in Buffalo. The congregation was known as Lloyd's Memorial United Church of Christ under his leadership. Born in South Bend, where he graduated from Central High School, Mr.

Hayes was ordained in the Baptist denomination in 1946. He earned his bachelor's degree in divinity in 1950 from what is now the University of Indianapolis, which is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. He later earned a master of divinity degree from Colgate-Rochester Divinity School in 1953. He was ordained a United Church of Christ pastor in 1954. He briefly led congregations in New Haven, and Brooklyn before coming to Buffalo in' 1956.

From Buffalo he went on Kansas City, where he served as administrative director of St. Mark's Church, one of the nation's first ecumenical churches to unite Catholics and Protestants in a single congregation. He was also engaged in civil rights activism in that city and served with public bodies to help provide low-income housing and human-services programs. Mr. Hayes accepted a call to become pastor of First Church of the Brethren in 1977.

He served on national boards of the denomination and was elected moderator of the Church of the Brethren, the highest elected position in the denomination, in 1988. Mr. Hayes remained affiliated with the United Church of Christ. Surviving are his daughter, Eileen of Seattle, his mother, Estella Howard of South Bend: a brother, James L. of Washington, D.C.: and two sisters, Novella Flint and Ruth Sanders, both of South Bend.

Father Gerencser died July 21 in his Williamsville home after a two-year illness. He was 80. The native of Hungary established the school for gifted children from prekindergarten through Charles F. Forness, a native of Gasport, died Monday (Aug. 23, 1993) in Lockport Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He retired in 1974 as a custodian in Lockport public schools after a 30-year career. Forness was a member of the Cabin Range Skeet Club, 3 Club and the state and national skeet associations. He also was a life member of the Lockport PTA.

Survivors include his wife, the former Veronica Steblein: three sons. David of Gasport, C. Edward and Paul and two grandchildren. high school in 1957. It closed in 1991 because of financial problems.

A member of the Order of Piarist Fathers, Father Gereneser was primarily responsible for developing the school's broad-based and diverse curriculum. which offered a unified sequence of historical study covering both Eastern and Western civilizations, numerous languages and a seminar program in which students often surpassed college requirements.
