We’re proud to spotlight Paralympian, author and DCJ staff member Sarah Rose ⭐As a former Paralympian who competed in Athens, Beijing and London herself, Sarah understands firsthand the power of representation. Now, she is channelling that experience in her children’s book ‘ABC Disability’, filling a crucial gap in children’s educational resources about disabilities. ‘ABC Disability’ is offering young readers a chance to learn about disabilities in an engaging, child-friendly way. As Sarah says, “One in five Australians live with a disability, and the disability community is big and beautiful, bold and bright.”We’re truly inspired by her ongoing commitment to creating a world where everyone can see themselves represented and valued.

I would argue that learning about disabilities should be as basic as ABCs.It's foundational for societal inclusivity, understanding fosters acceptance, and this starts from childhood. Introduce diverse characters in your kids' books.Education shapes our future; let's make it inclusive.

From experiencing homelessness to graduating uni. Meet Ethan this Homelessness Week. Since age 16, Ethan has lived in cars, on friends’ couches, the streets, in violent share houses and youth refuges. After googling Southern Youth and Family Services, Ethan phoned Link2home and now receives private rental subsidy support through Rent Choice Youth. “A big motivator for me was seeing how bad the situation is for so many young people. I didn’t want to get stuck,” says Ethan. “Rent Choice Youth got me into a safe space. Having stable accommodation has helped me to recover, escape poverty and focus on my studies.” With integrated housing, healthcare and education support, Ethan has completed a Bachelor of Psychology and Nutrition. He hopes to complete a Master of Medicine. “Rent Choice Youth is a great program to get young people on their feet. It’s important that it continues and funding increases in this cost-of-living crisis.” To anyone facing a similar situation, Ethan says: “Homelessness can happen to anyone. You've got to know that you can get support, that you're capable of so much more and you can get through this.” This Homelessness Week, learn more about the NSW Government’s $6.6 billion commitment to making experiences of homelessness rare, brief, and not repeated, visit https://lnkd.in/eHA4hTQc Everyone has a right to a safe and stable home.

After her divorce, Tanya was facing homelessness at age 57. “I found renting in the private rental market impossible. There were weeks when I was eating rolled oats.”

Step inside Lilly Pilly Place, a new refuge on Kamilaroi Country, Gunnedah, for Aboriginal women and children escaping domestic and family violence. The property contains five self-contained homes, around a ‘core’ of onsite support services including counselling, legal assistance and employment support. Lilly Pilly Place is funded by DCJ and run by Gunida Gunyah, an Aboriginal Controlled Community Organisation. Risk of homelessness and escaping domestic violence are intrinsically linked. The rate of homelessness for Aboriginal people in NSW is more than twice the state average. Two ways DCJ and Homes NSW are providing support include: 🏚️The Core and Cluster Program $426.6 million is invested to deliver new women’s refuges, including Aboriginal-led refuges, to support an additional 2900 women and children escaping violence each year.   🏚️Aboriginal Homelessness Sector Growth Program $12 million is invested to grow Aboriginal Controlled Community Organisations, so more Aboriginal people experiencing homelessness receive culturally-safe support. Homelessness Week highlights the NSW Government’s commitment to making experiences of homelessness rare, brief and not repeated.
