Mods for October 2023 (2025)

This blog will highlight mods I am impressed by for October (2023)! And by the way, since today is Halloween, I wanted to say Happy Halloween! Anyway, to start this blog is:

Doom Mods for October:

The first mod to be featured is Kirby’s Halloween Adventure, a mod of Kirby’s Adventure from the Nintendo Entertainment System. This Halloween-themed mod can be considered Halloween-themed DLC for Kirby’s Adventure. There are modified mid-bosses and bosses and unique enemy sprites that are Halloween-focused! Kirby’s Halloween Adventure also features new tile sets that fit the game’s theme nicely. And finally, there are levels re-imagined in Kirby’s Adventure from later Kirby games, which is nice to see on the NES. However, as a quick reminder, bypass this mod if you are predisposed to seizures since several flashes could trigger seizures. Below is a playthrough of the mod fromHack Games Longplay Channel. You can download the modhere.

Luigi’s Mansion Beta Restoration(+) (Mod of Luigi’s Mansion)

The next featured mod is Luigi’s Mansion Beta Restoration(+), currently being developed by modder and YouTuberPortable Productions. Luigi’s Mansion Beta Restoration(+) strives to restore beta elements from Luigi’s Mansion, the launch title for the Nintendo GameCube. This mod features new rooms and bosses, gameplay mechanics, and the style of the E3 2001 Luigi’s Mansion Demo build. What I have seen so far is rather interesting, as I remember enjoying Luigi’s Mansion quite a bit. I still cannot find my original copy. Anyway, the demo features a completed Area 1 and Area 2. The download link is in the video’s description.

The next mod to be featured is Super Mario Arbitrium, a mod of Super Mario World developed byEvernnon SMW Central. The demo has 24 exits, with 80 in development for the final release. Super Mario Arbitrium features an original story with a Mario flare. The mod’s overall level design is “a combination of Donkey Kong Country and Sonic 3,” which is intriguing in the Mario universe. The difficulty of Super Mario World Arbitrium is Standard: Very Hard, and this mod features custom powerups, an item purchasing system similar to Paper Mario’s, hidden moons like Super Mario Odyssey, and branching paths in the levels like Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. This mod is on my radar for sure. Below is a playthrough fromHack Games Longplay Channel. You can download the modhere.

Just What Do I Need is a mod of the Game Boy Advance port of Super Mario World titled Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2. Just What Do I Need is a 6-exit mod that features a mix of Standard, Kaizo, and Puzzle levels. Even though the Super Nintendo version of Super Mario World is better, Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2 is a unique port featuring many differences from the original Super Nintendo version (including Luigi’s and Yoshi’s behaviors) that make it stand out. Below is a playthrough fromHack Games Longplay Channel. You can download the modhere.

Junkoid (Mod of Metroid) and Super Junkoid (Mod of Super Metroid)

Junkoid is a mod of the original NES Metroid. The overall summary for this mod is this:

“Afflicted with perpetual nightmares, Junko is determined to defeat the manifestation of her dreams – the serpent trickster Asmodeus.”

Based on what I have seen so far, Junkoid seems promising, and while it features a similar level design to the original NES Metroid, the level design in Junkoid is excellent. I also enjoy the mod’s music and art style. Below is a playthrough fromHack Games Longplay Channel. You can download the modhereorhere. Below the Junkoid video will be a playthrough fromHack Games Longplay Channelof Super Junkoid, a mod of Super Metroid. You can download that modhereorhere. The summary for Super Junkoid is this:

“Trapped in a twisted dream where she is revered as a goddess, Junko must face the horrifying serpent that worships her.”

Super Mario Starlight (Super Mario World Mod)

Super Mario Starlight is another Super Mario World mod featuring a rather interesting story for the Mario universe. Based on what I have seen, Mario’s interactions with other NPCs are humorous. This mod features a hub world with a free-roaming game design, which is very impressive for the Super Nintendo. The levels are classic Super Mario flare, which is always excellent. Mario gains the Spin from New Super Mario Brothers Wii and the Wall Jump from Super Mario 64! So far, there are 30 exits, which are Yoshi Coins. And like most excellent Super Mario World mods, Super Mario Starlight has custom music! Below is a playthrough fromHack Games Longplay Channel. You can download the modhere.

Mario Kart R Advance (Mod of Mario Kart: Super Circuit)

In a nice twist, someone has created a mod for the much-maligned Mario Kart: Super Circuit. Although it is nowhere near the best Mario Kart game, I still remember having a good time playing it. Mario Kart R Advance features 20 tracks from Mario Kart R, a mod of Super Mario Kart (from the Super Nintendo)! Give this one a try if you like old-school 2D Mario Kart. Below is a playthrough fromHack Games Longplay Channel. You can download the modhere. You can download Mario Kart Rhere.

Sonic Megamix Mania (Mod of Sonic Mania)

Here is something new to my blog: Sonic the Hedgehog! Anyway,Sonic Megamix Mania is a mod of the beloved return to form for the Blue Blur, Sonic Mania. Sonic Megamix is a mod of the original 1991 Sonic the Hedgehog, released between 2005 and 2007. Sonic Megamix’s developer ported it to the Sega CD/Sega Mega CD. *Owning Sonic Mania Plus and Amy Mania (if you want to play as Amy Rose) on Steam* is a necessity to play Sonic Megamix Mania. Below is the trailer for Sonic Megamix Mania. Give this one a try for sure. Here is Sonic 1 Megamix for download.

Super Ale Bros. Redux (Mod of Super Mario Brothers)

The next featured mod is Super Ale Bros. Redux, a modified ASM mod of Super Mario Brothers that features:

  • Backwards scrolling
  • P-Switches (these turn coins into blocks and vice-a-versa)
  • On/Off Blocks
  • Textboxes (from Super Mario World)
  • 4 extra Kaizo levels
  • The ability to grab and toss Koopa Shells
  • Proper world theming
  • Saving and a Pause Menu
  • An HP Bar for Bowser (and False Bowser)
  • Note Blocks from Super Mario Brothers 3 and Super Mario World

So far, I have played World 1, which I thought was an excellent introductory set of levels to the game. Super Ale Bros. Redux introduces its mechanics and level design tropes rather nicely. You can download the modhere.
