This afternoon, I joined President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris at Prince George’s Community College as they announced new efforts to make prescription drugs more affordable through the Inflation Reduction Act.Maryland is a proud partner in the Biden-Harris Administration's efforts to protect, defend, and strengthen Americans' basic rights. Whether we’re working to lower drug costs through our first-in-the nation Prescription Drug Affordability Board, protecting critical investments in Medicaid so Maryland families can access affordable health care, or putting a referendum on the ballot to codify reproductive freedom in our Constitution, Maryland is ready to lead.

Lower drug costs are good, but chronic illness prevention and reversal is what is desperately needed. It's within reach by using metabolic interventions. An example is the ketogenic diet which was to have been studied as a treatment for schizophrenia at Spring Grove Hospital Center when your Secretary of Health cancelled it. Your commitment to lower cost, greater access, and the well-being of Maryland residents would be well-served by reinstituting that study and pursuing more. The related drug cost for these interventions is zero. I hope this article will inspire your curiosity: https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/richer-poorer-low-carb-diets-work-all-incomes-2024a1000cw5

I'm always concerned when government enters into private enterprise and start setting prices. Instead, of price controls, maybe provide incentives to encourage R&D and to stop the monetization of illness and disease 🤔... only in the US is it profitable to keep someone sick. Health care is nearly 20% of GDP.

On March 11, 2020, the “Part D Senior Savings Model” was announced due to Trump’s leadership.Part D enhanced alternative plans giving a lower out-of-pocket cost. This allowed for beneficiaries to volunteer for a low-cost-sharing $35 a-month supply for insulin. This saved beneficiaries 66% of their insulin. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services administrator Seema Verma is quoted in saying, “President Trump has forged partnerships with pharmaceutical manufacturers and plans to deliver lower priced insulin to our nation’s seniors.”Not only has the Kamala/Joe admin tried to take credit for this, but they neglected to recognize that this policy was Donald Trump’s from the get-go.

This is certainly good news! Looking forward to seeing inter-state progress as well. Maryland has so much potential especially if each rank and file public team member shows up to work honoring that they have been blessed to serve the people and support the rebuilding of vibrant community potential. It is awesome to see so many truly show up to make a difference and we have to encourage those who may need encouragement. I have met many wonderful and helpful folk and others who may have decided that they cannot make a difference. It really shows if someone has that mindset. Maryland has sooooooo much potential and each and everyone can make a difference in the community. Looking forward to progress and good news !

Her proposals, slammed as "gimmicky" and "bad economics," are nothing short of a disaster in the making. Megan McArdle of the Washington Post didn't mince words, calling her plans "economically illiterate."Harris's reckless spending, like handing out money for homes without boosting supply, guarantees shortages and inflation. This echoes the failed Harris-Biden student loan scheme, an overreach so blatant the courts had to step in.Her support for universal basic income—paying people not to work—shows a complete disregard for economic reality. As of May 2023, 21% of Americans are on welfare, and her policies would only balloon that number, dragging the nation further into dependency. When Harris says: "equitable treatment means we all end up at the same place," she reveals a chilling Marxist agenda that trashes the American Dream. She doesn't champion opportunity; she champions control, and that's a threat we can't ignore.

My Washington Post welcome interview!"One lesson is to make sure that there’s a strong consumer voice in the crafting of health-care policy. Patients and the public are sometimes left out of these discussions, but they are the point of the health-care system and should be at the center of the conversation.""We need to be very clear that our health care is on the ballot. There are stark differences on health care that we need to hear from our policymakers on, whether it’s reproductive health, the ACA and its future, the [expanded tax credits] or prescription drug prices. On prescription drug prices, we could see [the federal government] either expanding both the number of drugs that we negotiate over and having those discounted prices be extended to a much broader set of payers and patients. Or we could see that power be repealed. In terms of the ACA, it’s not just the5 millionpeople who could lose coverage under the expiration of those subsidies. It’s the20 million-plus folks that might lose coverage under a total repeal … [which would bring on] spiking premiums leading the market into a death spiral."

Louisiana's governor on May 24 signed a bill making his state the first in the U.S. toclassify two abortion-inducing medicationsas controlled substances, a category that healthcare regulators typically reserve for drugs prone to abuse or addiction. The new law designates mifepristone and misoprostol, which the FDA approved more than two decades ago as safe and effective for terminating pregnancies, as Schedule IV drugs, typically pain-killers and mood-altering medications that merit greater oversight due to their potential for abuse or dependence. The measure, thrusting Republican-led efforts to restrict abortion back to the political forefront in a presidential election year, was signed into law by Republican Governor Jeff Landry a day after the state legislature sent it to his desk. The bill cleared Louisiana's Republican-majority House of Representatives and Senate by wide margins, even as efforts by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to expand access to abortion pills is facing a legal challenge before the Supreme Court.Find out more: https://reut.rs/4bw0w1t

"Unnecessary restrictions on access to mifepristone...will impose on women much higher risks of experiencing medical complications, prolonged economic hardship, and even death....These harms will particularly and disproportionately affect our most vulnerable, including Black and indigenous women, low-income women, and women living in rural areas."Last week, we filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court in Food and Drug Administration (FDA) v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, urging reversal of the decision by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals revoking FDA approval of mifepristone. We are wholly against the usurping of abortion access and reproductive decisions from the hands of individuals, their families, and their health care providers.Read the full brief here: 👉👉👉 https://lnkd.in/eY6Yc_Ps.#promotingwomenlawyers #reproductivejustice #healthcareequity #reproductiverights #womenshealthcareishealthcare

On March 26, the US Supreme Court is hearing oral arguments in a case that could dramatically reshape the abortion access landscape—again. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is a groundless lawsuit targeting mifepristone, one of two drugs used in the most common abortion method in the US. Let’s be clear: Access to mifepristone is unchanged for now until the Court issues a decision. As our analysis explains, SCOTUS’s only reasonable option in this case is maintaining full access to this critical drug. Whether you've been following the case since the beginning or it’s new to you, our latest analysis breaks down the 8 key points you need to know. 📢 https://gu.tt/49Jw5E0

As medical professionals, it is our duty to educate the legal community on the intricacies of emergency abortion and the complications that arise when clinical care is denied to patients. Recently, the potential reversal of Roe V Wade has brought this issue to the forefront. That's why I voluntarily presented our new scoring system to help non-medical professionals make informed decisions when it comes to providing or denying care. Our goal is to clear the clutter and ensure that patients receive the care they need.https://lnkd.in/dx4rKF5k

This The Hill article from back in September reads that "Congress is under the gun on must-pass health bills":https://lnkd.in/gdj_wxJSIs that so?There is a vast gap between our aspirations for #healthcare legislation vs what is actually passed.Midway through its term, the current 118th Congress is on track to be one of the least productive on healthcare issues. So far, only ONE bill has passed both chambers of congress to become US law overall all of 2023! ("Securing the U.S. Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network Act")Don't believe me? Look for yourself:https://lnkd.in/gQJPd5EnTo give you a sense of how how difficult it is to pass healthcare legislation, in the prior 117th congress only 19 of 2275 bills introduced became law. That translates to 0.8%. And that was when BOTH chambers were controlled by Democrats who care about healthcare! To be fair, these numbers may not paint a 100% accurate picture. For some reason, the #inflationreductionact does not show up under the "health" filter for the 117th congress, even though it had pretty important healthcare-related provisions.A search for "prescription drug pricing" shows ~13 bills have been introduced since the beginning of the year:https://lnkd.in/geDSxTKd#biopharma leaders need to be aware of what is -- and is not -- happening in Washington DC, and choose their battles wisely. Some of these bills would surely hurt #biotechinnovation and patients alike, while others may make good sense.

Where Kamala Harris stands on three key pharma issuesHarris has shown support for drug pricing reform and took a hard line in several suits against pharma companies during her tenure as attorney general in California. Here’s what Harris’ record reveal about where she stands on three important issues:- Medicare drug price negotiations - Harris played a pivotal role in the Biden Administration passing the Inflation Reduction Act- Out-of-pocket costs - The IRA also created new out-of-pocket caps for seniors on Medicare Part D plans. In May, she said she intended to expand cost caps beyond Medicare recipients- Abortion and women’s health - Harris has made herself a central figure in the fight for women’s healthcare and abortion access, including abortion medication.
